Elina Birch
Hi! I’m Elina, a creative, illustrator and educator who loves to tell stories through characters and world-building.
My comics follow an unconventional layout where the story flows across the pages with hand-lettered text intertwined between the images. Most of my characters and worlds are fantasy based, inspired by my Latvian heritage and folklore. They often explore creatures and anthropomorphic animals, and my cat often plays an important role!
I always draw before I think! And often the creating is more important than the final outcome for me. Colour and my process, are key aspects of my illustration work, and I often combine media and different techniques to get just the right effect.
The stories I tell are for all shapes and sizes and influenced by my Latvian childhood and Western media. I wish to create a sense of escapism and belonging through my work. My characters bridge the gap between East and West and ‘heal-my-inner-child’, which I hope it does for others. Working with people and local communities, I keep spreading creativity and art, so they can become artists just like me. Stay Drawing!
